Afro-Cubans keep close watch on island politics

"As a group, Afro-Cubans have made more advances in every walk of life since the revolution, than in the previous 500 years," 69 year old Nelson Jones, a U.S.-based Afro Cuban tells Olu Alemoru, the staff writer for the Los Angeles Wave.

"In 1959, all forms of segregation were outlawed and equal opportunity became a reality for all Cubans."

"There has been so much distortion about him," said Jones, an Afro-Cuban American. "But Castro's legacy over the last 50 years is unassailable. Of course, he's made mistakes but he's an incredible visionary and I don't believe you can ignore that."
